More Doors!

I scored 2 more doors this morning. It was kind of insane, and last minute, too. The doors were just 3 houses down on my street, but I was leaving (already 5 minutes late) for work to go catch my bus, so I literally did a mad dash back and forth to grab the doors and put them in my porch.

They also had about a dozen decent sash windows (a bit rotted but I would have liked the old glass from them). I would have grabbed them, but I was running late, so I only got 2 panes.

I do have a few issues with these doors, so I'm not 100% sure if I will use them at all, but I had to grab them.

They're solid Cedar, which is nice, but they're not in the best shape. They were not regularly painted, and have some water damage. They're also not matching (not a huge deal, but I would have liked them better if they were the same). One has a very deep panel, and the other has shallow panels that match the nice door I picked up last week.

The main problem I have with them is that they are drilled for newer hardware. The doors are not actually that old, since they never had old fashioned hardware on them, and they came with vinyl window inserts (which I removed). They are, however, MADE like traditional old doors.

One also had the top cut down at an angle.

I took a few minutes after work to completely strip all the hardware off. Not the greatest picture, but you get the idea.

Side note: regarding the window openings, I'd just make a traditional wooden window insert to go in them.

  1. I have a door exactly like the one on the right (it's actually old - it weighs a ton and there are ghost lines of deco-like hardware), and it's in need of a window insert. If you ever get around to making one...tutorial please?! :)

  2. The window insert won't be anything too fancy, basically a window to fit (made from wood, routed for glass with putty like my porch windows), and on the exterior side of the door (around the window opening) will go a moulding to hold the window. On the inside, there would be 6 of those large wing-nut catches to hold the window in the door.

I will definitely post a how-to when I do it, but I have no idea when that will be.
